Podcasting about Podcasting: The End

After listening to last weeks show, and considering a dozen swirling thoughts about the future of this show, I've decided there is only one thing to omit: talking about podcasting.

This is in part inspired by Jimmy Jett, who has decided to no longer mention or plug any other podcasts, and as a result, his show really feels and sounds, ultimately, like a radio broadcast.

The main focus is now music: no more ranting (THAT should be a challenge!), no more plugs, and no more tangeants.

Agree? Disagree? Let me know. This is your show, tell me what ya think.

  • Good move Jason.
No more 'aren't we cool cause we podcast'. Get on with it and provide quality content!
    I'm with you!

  • Yea Steve, my thoughts exactly. Especially with music podcasts, if we ever hope to achieve anything near critical mass, we need to appeal to everyone, not just the techno-geeks like me :-)

  • Actually, on Jimmy's show from 12/19, he clarified. He didn't mean NOT talking about podcasts at all...shoot, that's how most of us find out about one another, since this podcasting thing is still in it's infancy. All the new podcasts I've discovered were on recommendations from Jimmy, Mr. Curry, or others. He mean that he intended to avoid talking about podcasts when they talk about each other talking about each other...the "endless loop" as Jimbob from WWR describes it. I think recommended new podcasts is still very much in order, just not the whole "thanking me for thanking you for thanking me."

  • A-ha.I just heard the new Podcast about Nothing as well. I am glad he clarified that, and I will continue to recommend Podcasts that I enjoy...Just not spew forth with endless techno-babble or that "endless loop" that WWR despises....

  • Yeah, the first few podcasts I heard were all about how cool podcasting was and the technicalities and I kept zoning out. It wasn't until I heard the Dawn and Drew show that I decided they could be fun and interesting. So, I agree with the last post. It's good to review but bad to ramble on excessively.

I know what you mean - the 'podsterbation' going on, but it's a new thing, it's bound to happen. The techy stuff and the playing of audio comments (also guilty as charged!) does slow things down...

Please keep the rants, tangents and mentions of shows you like tho. It's what makes podcasting different to normal radio - you can take 5 and talk about the cat, the weather, the mic problems if you want...would be shame to lose it's uniqueness because people are used to 10 second intros and 2 minute tracks and jingles/intros every 15? Be different!

And I'm signed up with Tracks up the Tree and mathcaddy purely because of your mentions...:-D

  • If I may point you back to the article you linked to about how podcasting is more "human" than broadcast radio... Ranting and going off on tangeants lends a sense of familiarity to the show. Sure, maybe put a bit more music, and lend a professional feel to the show, but don't cut the talking. It's what makes podcasting so good.

And as for pluggin other podcasts... I would be missing out on a whole lot of awesome shit without your plugs...
