1st up: Syd

Syd's music is a bit difficult to pin down and label completely. With each track from his latest CD, Fault Lines, I kept trying to fit him into a tiny labeled box, but was met with frustration at each attempt and with each passing track. In fact, Syd was one of the reasons why I changed the format of this show from introducing multiple artists with similar styles to the "one artist/one show" style that I have currently adopted. I was having a hard time figuring out where exactly to place his music. He isn't folk. He isn't pop. He isn't rock. He is a pleasant mixture of all of these, and then some, yet he pulls it off tremendously well. Syd is the reason why I love independent music, diversity and devoid of any "formula". It is real and straight from the soul of the artists.

Next: Smokescreen

I found Smokescreen from garageband.com and was quickly drawn to their promise of sending a free CD. I jumped over to their website, www.smokescreen.tv, which proved it absolutely true. Their entire CD was released under their own label, Closetspace Records, and was completely free of charge to anyone that asked for it. What a surprise and a real rarity in all the bands and artists that I have been looking at over the past few months.

The quality of the CD is pretty damn good, considering that the band recorded this album completely on their own. I have said this before, and I will certainly say it again, this album should serve as a testimate to what is possible with today's digital technology. A couple hundred dollars on decent microphones, a solid digital recorder and/or good multitrack recording software, a little bit of know-how and a lot of patience is what went into Activate. What came out was a great sounding EP that I have been really enjoying since I received it.

Podshow vs AMP

Today, Adam Curry and Ron Bloom released their "Podshow Strategy Cast." In it, they outlined the basic structure and current staff of Podshow. The cast also had a few distinct quotes I'd like to bring to your attention.

#1:Adam Curry:
"We need a place where that can come together. Where you can find music you can play on your show. Find out what's being played alot, what's hot....."

#2: Ron Bloom:
"Producers aren't banding together to build their own listener base. Everybody talks about a democracy, but to be one, everybody has to come together and work towards a common goal."

They issue a call for an independent music community for artists, bands, and podcasters to unite, that apparently does not exist.

You have GOT to be kidding me. It's interesting: I think I've heard of something along these lines called the Association of Music Podcasting. A group that has banded together quite strongly, with over 20 shows in it's umbrella, all aligned with the same purpose: Promote Independent music. What's also strange is I recall hearing Curry repeatedly praising AMP for what it's doing (DSC 2-18 & DSC 2-25), and he now acts as if the association does not exist.

I need to make it clear to all of you, my awesome listeners, that as the founder of AMP, I take this very personally.
Listen to the music Curry typically plays on his show, and tell me honestly that he is even remotely interested in passionately promoting the indie music scene...

As the Podshow camp develops it's strategy and aligns itself with advertisers, staff, and clever ways to profit off the bands and shows they sign, I'd like to urge all of you to visit www.musicpodcasting.org, join our forum, and take an active role in the FIRST music-podcasting based community. Bands, submit your music to our library and plug your music...Listeners, say whatever is on your mind!

Sorry if this a bit off the beaten path for this blog, but it's very relevant to Insomnia Radio. It's a shame that Podshow is flat out ignoring the existence of AMP.
Thanks for reading my rant. It's much shorter than I'd like it to be, but hopefully the point is clear.

One more thing: Podcast Alley officially sucks. Don't ya just LOVE that Paris Hilton banner, with the footnote: "Another Podshow.com CastBlast"

One day, Jets to Brazil bassist Jeremy Chatelain set out to record an album inspired by AM country-tinged rock tunes. (Think acoustic Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, and Willie Nelson hashing it out in a Brooklyn tenement) He set up in his apartment's spare bedroom, and later emerged with "High Uinta High"

Perhaps I've been living in a cave. Perhaps I've just been too busy. But it came to my attention today (finally) that Warren Ellis is podcasting. AND he's a Libsyn'er.

His show is the Superburst Mixtape, and it is an explosive, edgy, truly indie collection of music, spoken word, whatever he's loving at the moment. Highly recommended. So much so, that you should seriously just skip my show this week and catch up on his. GO GO....

The next episode of Insomnia Radio will be a local spotlight on the bristling, inspired music scene brewing there.
From Punk to Americana to Hip-Hop, I've been pleasantly surprised at the quality music coming my way, and plan on sharing it with you within the next 2 weeks.

The music has been flowing in at a rapid clip over in Insomnia-land. We're only 4 days removed from Episode #16, and already the playlists for 17, 18, and 19 are DONE! (and these are 10-track shows)

In the last 48 hours, no less than 12 bands have submitted tracks. This is a clear indication that something is happening out there. An increasing # of indies are becoming aware, waking up to what we're doing and, amazingly, are offering nothing but enthusiasm and support.

What's the recipe for success?
Word of mouth. Undeniably, this is happening on many sub-levels. Readers blog about it, spreading it around. The media picks up on the buzz. Listeners turn friends on to podcasting, bands who have been featured take their excitement and share it with colleagues, etc...Hell, Ulysses even offered to pass out Insomnia Radio flyers at their shows! Unreal! Find an RIAA band who will do that...

It's insane guys. I just wanted to share my excitement with you...
(and now for the unexpected "but...")

This is getting overwhelming. The show is growing, and growing up, expanding it's reach further than one person can handle. So, if you are a band slated to be on the show, please be patient. Your music is coming! If you've dropped me an email and I haven't replied, please know I'm working towards it.

And all of you Insomniacs out there? If a Thursday passes without a show, rest assured it's for me to regain my sanity....

From our forthcoming AMP website:
AMP was formed in January 2005 to unite podcasters who play awesome, legally available independent music.

We are a bunch of music lovers who have access to great, mostly independent music that you probably haven’t heard of (yet). We provide a fresh alternative to the radio you may be used to. It is all 100% legal and safe to download. Each AMP member has his/her own unique podcast show, but we all share a passion for getting great new music heard, and we believe AMP helps everyone: music listeners, bands and labels, podcasters, and podcast service providers (PSPs).

Also of note is The Tragically Nameless Podcast. This is a politically charged, heavy music show fronted by Deniz. This kid is only 15, and after 4 shows, he has already found his groove and is a thrill to listen to. He is also quickly becoming a podcasting music crusader, gathering permissions from such notable labels as Nitro and Jade Tree, and heavily promoting local bands in his area.

His show is special to me, because Insomnia Radio inspired him to create it, and I helped set him up and get the wheels churning, so go check it out.

Also, thanks to everyone who has posted their thoughtful and intelligent comments regarding my RIAA situation. Really appreciated. Keep the thoughts coming.

And finally, a question for ya: How does an all request Insomnia Radio sound? I'd like to do one once a month beginning in February. This would be entirely listener driven, as you can submit bands from your area, or simply request songs you'd like to hear. Let me know what ya think...

The Day RIAA Made Contact...

So it's come to this. At this stage in the game, I didn't expect to see this can of worms spring open just yet, but here we go. (Nah, not an evil lawsuit as you may suspect, especially since I'm RIAA-free)

A few days ago, I was approached by a representative of the band "Buddahead." In retrospect, many of us music 'casters were contacted...
"Here's a great band from an independent label! Here is permission to play their tracks! Here is everything you'll need! Play proudly!"

So I let the lush, melodic, well-produced & wondrous music of Buddahead bend my ear.
Then I decided to start digging. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Sanctuary Records is not only RIAA, but houses such acts as WuTang Clan, Nancy Sinatra, Neil Young, Anthrax, Morissey, and the fucking New York Dolls!

Immediately I felt my mind go into overdrive. At first, the decision was obvious. With my anti-RIAA stance, of course I would NOT even entertain the idea of giving Buddahead airtime. Then the inner argument followed thusly: Is it fair to discriminate against a terrific, fledgling band who are just getting their feet wet, because they're associated with the RIAA? Is Sanctuary Records one of the big 5 giants? No, and No.

A-ha, but then the entire mission statement of this show came into the forefront. "Look at how much of an anti-RIAA crusader you've become, Jason! And besides, they won't need podcasters, they'll no doubt be on every radio station from Florida to California in about 9 days. Don't play them! Don't take the risk. Keep doing what you're doing. It's working!"

So, my friends, I am in turmoil over this. Buddahead ARE an outstanding, honest, quality band. You SHOULD go buy their album "Crossing the Invisible Line" immediately. But, I am extremely hesitant to play this music on the show. "you're insane" I hear you saying. "This is huge! An RIAA label is encouraging podcasters to safely and legally play their music, and you're saying NO!!!! You imbecile!", I hear you saying...

I'm really interested in what you do have to say about this little snafu. Totally open to any and all comments, negative, positive, pro-RIAA, anti-RIAA. There are some large issues that could spring from this situation, both great and evil.

Should it be all about the music? Should label status matter, providing the band is underground and worthy of your attention?

Just finalized the playlist for #14, and it's going to be a tune-packed 14 song longplayer...
For the first time, I have legal permission to play all 14 bands; a milestone for Insomnia Radio, and something that will continue, on the road to complete guilt-free, Non-RIAA, legal podcasting.
